Abstract
Proximal fifth metatarsal fractures, such as Jones fractures (a notable subset of fractures occurring at the metaphyseal–diaphyseal junction), remain a challenging injury for orthopedic surgeons. This review examined pathophysiology, classification, and treatment options for such fractures, specifically the unique anatomical and vascular considerations that complicate healing. Although conservative management may be suitable for some fracture types, surgical intervention, especially intramedullary screw fixation, for Jones fractures in athletic populations have outcomes superior to those of other techniques. This review highlights the importance of tailored treatment approaches based on fracture characteristics and patient factors while also emphasizing the need for further studies to standardize classification and optimize treatment protocols.
