Synovial chondromatosis of the glenohumeral joint in female professional golfer: a case report and literature review article

Abstract
Synovial chondromatosis is a benign proliferative disease that originates from the synovial tissue, bursa, or tendon sheath and causes joint pain, stiffness, and a limited range of motion. Herein, we report a 24-year-old right-handed female professional golfer who presented with chronic left shoulder pain. MRI revealed multiple loose bodies in the form of bony ossicles throughout the glenohumeral joint, as well as intraosseous migration of a loose body into the medial aspect of the greater tubercle of the left humerus. Loose bodies were removed and chondral defects were assessed with arthroscopy. Numerous loose bodies, which spread throughout the inferior recess of the capsule and glenohumeral joint, were detected. The patient had recovered to a full range of motion and with no pain at the 4-week follow-up. She underwent muscle strength exercises, and she returned to golf practice with no limitationsWe also reviewed the literature and case reports of athletes and determined the point at which exercise return was possible.
